Trump says Iran deal possible as Tehran reviews US peace proposal
Donald Trump said a deal with Iran was “very possible” as Tehran reviewed a US-backed peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict and easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Al Arabiya English and Reuters, the proposed framework could formally end the war while opening discussions on sanctions relief, shipping access, and Iran’s nuclear program.
“We’ve had very good talks over the last 24 hours, and it’s very possible that we’ll make a deal,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
Trump later said the conflict “will be over quickly.”
Iran reviews proposal
An Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson told ISNA that Tehran would respond to the proposal, while Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei described it as “more of an American wish-list than a reality.”
Sources cited by Reuters said the proposal could take the form of a one-page memorandum formally ending the conflict before broader negotiations begin.
However, major disputes remain unresolved, including:
- Iran’s nuclear program
- Restrictions on missile development
- Shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz
- US sanctions on Tehran
The proposal reportedly does not directly address Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium or Tehran’s regional proxy network.
Pakistan mediating talks
A Pakistani source told Al Arabiya that Iran could deliver its response through Pakistan as early as Thursday.
The source said communication channels remain open and discussions continue regarding a possible easing of the US naval blockade in exchange for a gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan has played a central mediation role between Washington and Tehran throughout the conflict.
Markets react to deal hopes
News of possible progress in negotiations pushed global oil prices sharply lower on Wednesday.
Brent crude briefly fell around 11% to near $98 per barrel before recovering above $100.
Global stock markets also rose on expectations that an agreement could reduce pressure on energy supplies and shipping routes.
The conflict has disrupted global trade since February, when the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Tehran later responded by targeting regional infrastructure and restricting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that previously handled roughly 20% of global oil and gas trade.
US maintains pressure
Despite diplomatic efforts, the United States continues to maintain a naval blockade targeting Iranian shipping.
US Central Command said Wednesday that US forces disabled an Iranian-flagged tanker attempting to reach an Iranian port in violation of the blockade.
Trump earlier paused “Project Freedom,” a US naval mission designed to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, citing progress in negotiations.
