Reviving Tradition: Illinois Foundry Reopens with a Specialization in Brake Drums

Rockford Brake Manufacturing Rebounds After Accuride Bankruptcy

As of November 24, Rockford Brake Manufacturing has grown to approximately 100 employees, a significant increase from just 50 at the beginning of the month. (Rockford Brake Manufacturing)

Highlights:

  • On November 20, four former employees reopened the Gunite foundry as Rockford Brake Manufacturing, marking its first production of brake drums following Accuride’s bankruptcy in 2024.
  • The company secured over $10 million in funding and has rehired many previous staff members as it aims for a monthly output of 65,000 units and plans to expand its workforce to around 150 by mid-2026.
  • Management anticipates scaling operations throughout next year as permits are renewed and market demand increases due to domestic sourcing regulations and tariffs under Section 232.

A manufacturing site with roots dating back to 1854 rarely sees new beginnings. Yet on November 20, the Gunite foundry in Rockford, Illinois achieved a notable milestone by producing its first iron as an independent brake drum manufacturer. The production line quickly began rolling out brake drums.

This facility previously operated under Accuride’s umbrella until February when it was forced into liquidation after filing for bankruptcy in October of the previous year. At that time, all operations ceased and over three hundred workers were laid off.

The deep connection between this plant and its community is undeniable; hence why four former employees took initiative to establish Rockford Brake Manufacturing. They acquired the expansive facility encompassing a gray iron foundry along with machine shop capabilities across a sprawling forty-one acres.

Founders Tim Davis, Scott Henderson, Mike Brandi and Brandon Baumann

The local trust recognized reopening this historic plant was essential for community stability. The new owners managed to secure ownership at an incredibly low cost-just $100k plus closing expenses-making it feasible compared to other potential buyers who would have faced higher operational costs.

The founders appointed Paul Wright-a former executive from Accuride-to lead their venture forward. By late November, they had successfully onboarded around one hundred team members who had previously worked at Gunite; many joined within six weeks after validating equipment on-site.

“This team is uniquely qualified for such rapid progress,” stated Director of Operations Brandon Baumann during an interview with Transport Topics. “It’s been quite emotional,” added Wright before their inaugural pour of iron materialized into reality-“It’s not merely about hope.”

With more than eighty distinct drum patterns available for Gunite-branded products already established priorly by Accuride’s legacy operation-and thanks largely due to commitments exceeding $10 million from major truck manufacturers-the swift relaunch became achievable according to Wright’s insights regarding operational readiness including permit renewals underway now too!

This upcoming year will see production ramping up initially starting at thirty thousand units monthly before reaching sixty-five thousand by mid-2026-a critical threshold identified by management where profitability can be attained alongside workforce expansion goals targeting one hundred fifty personnel total!

The newly refurbished holding furnace operates using cold-fired cupola technology rather than electric arc methods while utilizing primarily recycled materials (around eighty-five percent) sourced locally within Northern Illinois which enhances sustainability efforts significantly! Additionally coking coal comes domestically sourced too while exploring options recycling old brake drums further strengthens supply chains effectively reducing environmental impact overall!

Past clientele included major Class Eight OEMs along with trailer manufacturers indicating strong market ties still exist despite current challenges facing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) amidst ongoing freight market fluctuations noted recently by Wright himself suggesting aftermarket sectors may rebound quicker moving forward instead!

“Our focus remains solely on producing high-quality drum products delivering exceptional value,” emphasized Wright confidently reflecting future aspirations aligned closely alongside anticipated growth opportunities arising through evolving domestic manufacturing policies stemming from recent tariff implementations affecting truck makers directly!”
