A Tanzania-registered container ship, the Golden Star 1, sank in the Singapore Strait on Friday night, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
The incident happened 6 km off the Indonesian Island of Batam at 10.30 pm.
According to reports, the ship took on water and subsequently sank. However, all 9 crew members were rescued by Indonesian authorities.
Ship traffic in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore is unaffected by the sinking, and there are no reports of oil pollution in the nearby waters, the MPA said in a statement.
It also informed the Indonesian authorities and said that it is monitoring the information.
The cause of the sinking will be investigated, the agency added while issuing navigational broadcasts for ships in the area, advising them to tread cautiously and report any debris or containers adrift.
Built in 1995, Golden Star 1 is 177 m long and 28 m wide. At the time of the incident, the vessel had left Singapore and was sailing towards Malaysia.
