Worker loses life during repair work in the Port of Hamburg

A 43-year-old worker was fatally injured during repair work after an object fell on him onboard a vessel in the Port of Hamburg on 29 May.

According to local news sources, the incident happened in the Waltershof area while he was working on a ship’s crane. According to initial reports, he may have accidentally disconnected a hydraulic line, causing the crane or a heavy component to suddenly lower or tip, trapping him underneath.

Emergency services were called to the scene in the late afternoon and, with assistance from the ship’s crew, managed to free the man. However, despite resuscitation efforts, he died at the scene due to severe injuries.

Police said a heavy object, possibly a crane attachment or part of the ship, fell or shifted during the accident. The exact mechanism is still unclear.

The water police and the State Criminal Police Office are investigating the incident as a workplace accident, including whether there are any criminal implications.
