LR supports rollout of GOT Coating's graphene propeller coating at Posidonia

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has supported GIT Coatings in the launch of its latest propeller coating technology, unveiled during Posidonia 2026, following LR type approval.

The XGIT-VORTEX™ system, a graphene-based propeller coating designed to maintain performance between drydock intervals, was presented at a joint client event on the LR stand.

The coating is designed to address persistent challenges in propeller performance, including fouling build-up, cavitation damage and loss of surface smoothness over time. Together, these factors directly influence fuel consumption, emissions performance and operating costs across a vessel’s lifecycle.

LR’s involvement focused on providing independent technical assurance through the type approval process, supporting the safe adoption of advanced coating technologies in line with applicable industry standards.

Speaking at the event, Andy McKeran, Chief Growth Officer at LR, said: “Shipowners are looking for technologies that deliver consistent performance in service, not just at installation. The launch builds on ongoing collaboration between LR and GIT Coatings in the development and approval of performance-focused coating technologies. Earlier this year, LR granted approval for GIT’s graphene-based hull coating and in October 2024, LR awarded GIT Coatings with the maritime industry’s first Enhanced Antifouling Type Approval.
